For centuries, humanity wondered whether the Solar System was a cosmic anomaly or if other stars also hosted planetary companions. The answer arrived in 1995 when astronomers discovered 51 Pegasi b, the first confirmed exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star. Since that milestone, space-borne observatories such as the Kepler Space Telescope and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) have identified over five thousand confirmed worlds beyond our solar neighbourhood. These discoveries have revealed staggering diversity: gas giants orbiting scorchingly close to their parent stars ('hot Jupiters'), rogue planets wandering dark interstellar voids, and rocky worlds situated within the so-called 'habitable zone' where liquid water could theoretically persist. With the deployment of the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have transitioned from mere planetary detection to atmospheric characterization, analyzing molecular biosignatures such as methane, carbon dioxide, and water vapour. While no definitive proof of extraterrestrial life has yet been verified, the statistical probability that life exists elsewhere in the universe has never appeared more compelling.
